Medical Radiation Therapy

Medical Radiation Therapy

Radiation therapy uses radiation to treat disease. Most patients receiving radiation therapy are cancer patients, and therapists work under the supervision of a specialist doctor who treats tumours.

Radiation therapists plan their patients' treatment and administer it with a range of high-tech machines.

This major is available for the Bachelor of Health Science (BHealSc).

Did you know?

Medical Radiation Therapy is based at the University of Otago's Wellington School of Medicine & Health Sciences.

To be selected for the degree programme requires sponsorship from a suitable hospital so you can get clinical training. You also need a current, comprehensive, first-aid certificate.

Apart from the academic papers, there is a large component of clinical work which includes placements with your sponsoring hospital.

Career opportunities

Because cancer affects so many people, qualified radiation therapists are in demand in NZ and overseas.

Therapists work closely with patients and their families at what is usually a stressful time. But the job satisfaction can be immense, because with recent advances in the early detection of cancer, the rate of successful treatment is high.

There are plenty of opportunities to work abroad, as medical radiation therapy is an international profession. There are also chances to specialise in particular treatments.
