The Bachelor of Māori Traditional Arts (BMTradArts) is a broad based degree with an emphasis on the Māori language, Māori cultural practices and Māori performing arts with students choosing to specialise in either toi whakairo (carving arts) or ngā mahi a te whare pora (weaving and plaiting).

Did you know?
The Bachelor of Māori Traditional Arts (BMTradArts), was introduced for the first time in 2006 upon the completion of the Te Tumu building. As noted above, from 2010 no new students will be accepted for this degree.
The Te Tumu building provides state of the art facilities to teach weaving, carving and the performing arts, catering for students who wish to specialise in the study of traditional Māori arts.
Students will make kete (baskets), whāriki (mats), kōwhaiwhai paintings, bone and wood carvings, all of which they are able to keep.

Career opportunities
Graduates will be competent in the traditional arts of carving or weaving and performing arts, and fluent in Māori language and knowledge about customary Māori practices.
The Bachelor of Māori Traditional Arts is useful to those who wish to pursue a career as weaving artists, carving artists, teachers, conservationists, resource managers and community developers.
