Japanese Studies aims to provide students with a high level of expertise in both Japanese language and culture. The latter are introduced through a variety of media, including literature, films and videos.

Otago has recently negotiated student exchange relationships with several Japanese universities, through which successful students are offered scholarships for an all-expenses-paid year of study in a sister university in Japan. This offers a wonderful opportunity for students to master the language and gain first hand knowledge of Japan and its culture.

This major is available for the Bachelor of Arts (BA).
