History

History gives an understanding of the past and present.

To see the perspective of NZ's position in today's world, to know how cultures and countries developed and to understand Maori-Pakeha relations in contemporary NZ, we need to study history. Any society without a sense of history has lost not only its memory but its identity.

Sometimes controversial, always intriguing, History is a subject for the intellectually curious, for those fascinated by the complex diversity of the human historical experience, and for those seeking deeper perspectives on the world's contemporary predicaments.

This major is available for the Bachelor of Arts (BA).

Did you know?

History explores how and why change has occurred in human societies over time. It therefore asks us to think about ourselves as individuals and as members of a society and a culture located within a broad continuum of human experience across time and space.

History helps us to recognise the distinctive forces which have shaped our own society and determined our particular place within it, while also making us aware of common links which we share with all humanity.
