Computer Science is about making computers do what you want them to do, so our department makes a point of helping you to learn how to program well. We pride ourselves on providing a safe, supportive environment for learning.
 
Computer Science at Otago includes areas of study catering for all tastes: artificial intelligence for those interested in how the mind works, graphics for those interested in the visual arts, bioinformatics for biologists, theory of computation for those interested in mathematics or philosophy, and many more.
 
This major is available for the Bachelors of Arts (BA) and Science (BSc) respectively.
 

Did you know?

Computer Science students from Otago won the world programming contest in 1990, beating universities like MIT, Harvard, and the University of California.
 
Otago graduates work in the film industry for Pixar and Weta Digital, for computer game development companies such as Bungie, Sidhe, Traygames, and Straylight, and for NZ's top graphics and animation company, Animation Research Limited - the people who produce the graphics for the America's Cup as well as sports like golf and cricket.
 
An Otago Computer Science graduate wrote the software for NASA's Mars Exploration Rovers.
 

Career opportunities

There is a huge shortage of qualified IT people, so that companies all over the world are keen to employ competent IT graduates in a wide range of positions. Good pay and job security as well as variety of jobs make this the perfect time to enrol for computer science.
