Human Services (formerly known as Community & Family Studies) prepares students for employment in social services, community work, justice, social policy and youth work.
Courses explore family patterns, family forms and the way people grow and develop in various cultural contexts, as well as introducing students to ways of working in family, community and organisational settings.
This major is available for the Bachelors of Arts (BA) and Consumer & Applied Sciences (BCApSc) respectively.

At the community, regional and iwi levels, larger scale social networks are examined in terms of work and community life and the manner in which people interact.
In the face of social change and problems of income, employment, health and social problems, strategies for change and resolution are developed.

Career opportunities include: health promotion and education, community mental health, schools and education services, child and family policy, government social service agencies, voluntary welfare agencies, church social services, local government, community development and health and hospital services.
Graduates work as policy advisers and analysts, consumer rights workers, researchers, health educators, social workers, teachers, probation officers, counsellors, advocates, community workers, consultants and managers.
