Clothing & Textile Sciences is the study and development of clothing and textiles from the perspective of the physical, biological and social sciences.
 
It includes examination of characteristics of fibres, yarns and fabrics for a diverse range of purposes, and the properties and performance of these.
 
This major is available for the Bachelors of Consumer & Applied Sciences (BCapSc) and Science (BSc) respectively.

Clothing and many materials such as textiles and leather meet basic human needs, and are essential to performance, feelings of well-being in both the physical sense (e.g. for protection and warmth) and the social sense (e.g. belonging to a group).
 
Clothing plays an important role in non-verbal communication indicating many personal and social characteristics of the wearer.
 
Clothing and textile production and distribution are significant to the NZ and world economy, and clothing and textiles are one of the few product groups which have been subject to control in international trade for over half a century.
 

Career opportunities

Graduates find careers in various parts of the apparel/textiles and related sectors: in design, quality control, performance assessment, production management or sales and marketing.
 
There are also careers in teaching (from primary through to tertiary levels), in research (for government departments or related organisations), in cultural institutions such as museums (as curators, collection managers and conservators of textile and dress collections), in costume for theatre, film or television.
