Botany covers all aspects of the life of plants.
Botany includes the structure and development of plants, their physiology and biochemistry, health and disease, relationships with other organisms and the environment (ecology), as well as the traditional aspects of plant identification and classification.
This major is available for the Bachelor of Science (BSc).

Did you know?
The main emphasis at Otago is on the general biology, ecology and physiology of higher plants, marine algae, fungi and viruses, although other groups (conifers, ferns and mosses) are also included in the courses.

Career opportunities
The NZ economy depends heavily upon plants as primary products, and so there are opportunities in agriculture, forestry and horticulture, as well as conservation and resource management.
Botany and Ecology graduates can become research scientists, university lecturers, school teachers, forest ecologists, science technicians, ecological consultants, Ministry of Agriculture biosecurity officers, resource management coordinators, water quality scientists, local government environmental officers, biotechnologists, geneticists, plant pathologists and marine botanists.
