Biochemistry

Biochemistry

Biochemistry is fundamental to our understanding of how all living things are structured, and how they function and develop.

Biochemists are very much experimental scientists, exploring the world at the level of the molecule - in viruses, bacteria, yeasts, plants, animals and humans.

By combining the molecular approach of chemistry with the breadth and diversity of biology, biochemists continue to advance understanding of how cells are constructed and how they function and communicate with one another. They also look at genetic information, and how the chemistry of the cell is coordinated and controlled.

This major is available for the Bachelor of Science (BSc).

Did you know?

Because Biochemistry covers the spectrum of complexity from plants and bacteria, yeasts and viruses to humans, it underpins other life sciences, such as Botany, Genetics, Microbiology, Physiology and Zoology, as well as being a foundation subject for all Health Sciences.

Biochemistry today uses computers to mine information on genes and genomes in a new sub-discipline called Bioinformatics.

Biochemistry is a rapidly developing science and is at the heart of cutting-edge developments in molecular medicine and the biotechnology industry.

Career opportunities

Biochemistry graduates can choose from a wide and fast growing field of job opportunities, from drug design to brewing, and from forensics to bioinformatics.

Careers in research (university, government and private research institutes), human health, biotechnology, agriculture, forestry, pharmaceuticals, disease control, and the food, winemaking and brewing industries are all avenues available to biochemists.

Other opportunities include work in teaching, commerce, patent law, sciene policy, publishing and the media.
