Art is an essential part of the human experience and imagination. It is about beauty, about hopes, about fears.
Art History & Theory aims to open your eyes - and minds - to art and its influence on civilisations, past and present.
At Otago, you'll gain an appreciation and understanding of a wide variety of artworks. You can study a variety of historical periods, and, in the process, you will discover new ways of looking, thinking, talking and writing about art.
This major is available for the Bachelor of Arts (BA).

Our courses cover a range of 'core' periods, including Medieval, Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque, as well as those of the 20th Century (Modern Art, Pop Art), and the present (Contemporary Art).
We focus particularly on the Pacific - including NZ and Australia - and deal with art from settlement onwards.
Other courses focus on the literature of art, in line with our aim to develop the skills of art interpretation and criticism.

Career opportunities
Our graduates work at the managerial level in the arts industry - in galleries, museums and other institutions - both nationally and internationally, and in the public and private sectors. Many also hold senior positions in secondary and tertiary education.
An Art History & Theory degree is a highly relevant preparation for careers in media and advertising, and is often the first stage of training in specialised fields such as art administration, art conservation or art criticism.
