Anatomy & Structural Biology

Anatomy & Structural Biology

Anatomy & Structural Biology studies the structure of the human body at visible, microscopic and molecular levels.

It encompasses modern molecular and microscopical approaches as well as more traditional ones, using the latest techniques and ideas. It is fundamental to all biomedical science and an integral part of the biological disciplines, as it is closely related to physiology, biochemistry and physical anthropology.

This major is available for the Bachelor of Science (BSc).

Did you know?

The study of anatomy concerns biological structures ranging from gross anatomy (structures visible to the naked eye) to cell biology (internal structure and function of the cells which compose the tissues) and beyond to molecules and their organisation.

Also, there are specialised areas such as neuroscience, reproductive biology, clinical/functional anatomy, developmental biology, and biological anthropology.

Career opportunities

A degree in Anatomy & Structural Biology provides a comprehensive grounding in a core science and acts as a foundation for diverse career paths.

Skills gained include advanced knowledge of anatomical sciences, the ability to analyse and critique received wisdom, IT skills, organisation and time management skills, oral and written communication skills, and the ability to locate, evaluate and use information in a range of contexts.

Many of our recent graduates have obtained research jobs in NZ and overseas research labs and universities, while others are employed as sales representatives, medical writers, and administrators.
